Volunteering

The Charity employs a minimum staff. Basically, we rely on volunteers and their labour at all levels throughout the organisation.

Our Volunteers

Our volunteers are as diverse as the people who sail with us, making for a great mix. One thing they all have in common is their enthusiasm and belief that LYSI has the ability to bring about positive change in all young and disadvantaged people.

Our volunteers get involved in all aspects of running the organisation. Without them we simply would not be able to offer adventure under sail to so many people.

Afloat

Volunteers sail on our vessels as Sea Staff at all levels – from Bosuns to Skippers. Volunteers who command the vessel (captains) must have a valid skipper licence issued by a recognized authority. However, we rely heavily on volunteers to staff the boats; you can become part of our volunteer Sea Staff with little or no sailing experience – we offer a full programme of training for volunteer Sea Staff and welcome applications from across society.

Ashore

Volunteers also help us with our shore side operations by:

  • Helping with refit and maintenance weekends.
  • Fundraising
  • Represent LYSI at events such as boat jumbles, maritime festivals and fairs
  • Help young people prepare for their voyage by conducting pre-voyage preparation sessions
  • Helping to find young and disadvantaged people to take part in LYSI voyages
  • Helping with administration in the office

Port Support

Throughout the sailing season, our vessels might come into various ports to attend maintenance and perhaps change crews. While in port, our staff is extremely busy getting the boats ready for the next voyage. There are only a few hours to get everything done, including getting provisions on-board. It can also be an expensive time, getting taxis etc. as we don’t always have our vehicles at the ports. There are many tasks you may be able to help with, to lighten the load. Tasks include: collecting gas bottles, fuel, spare parts, food shopping, washing and drying tea towels, light maintenance etc.

Main Port: Poolbeg Marina, Liffey River, Dublin

We are looking for help – mainly on weekends during summer. If you are free on these dates, please contact us.

Drivers wanted

Throughout the year, there are many parts that need picking up and dropping off to the boats and various locations. In addition to this, staff might need to swap ports.

If you are available for such deliveries, please contact us.

The plan is to get the names and contact details of drivers and then email them once an opportunity arises. Please note that fuel costs will be reimbursed.

Office Help required

The sailing season is upon us again. In the office, we’re the paperwork ready for voyages, organizing Sea Staff for voyages, taking bookings for next year and performing other duties. Can you spare a couple of hours a week to come in and help at our office? Tasks include data input, filing, internet research and typing.

A couple of hours can make a real difference to the workload. If you can’t make it to the office, we can send some projects to you and you can complete them from the comfort of your own home. Anyone looking to add office skills/work experience to their C.V. this is an ideal opportunity. Previous office experience would be advantageous, but don’t worry no matter what your skills are we will put them to use.

Media Expert

LYSI have a webpage that needs constant updating and blogging. We have lots of material from our voyages, mostly in digital formats. We would love to share this on the internet and ensure it is not lost.

If you are free to help, please contact us.
